A long time ago, before Puget Sound was carved out by glaciers, when the mountains were young, and when the ancient forests were just seeding, the First People inhabited this land. Before European contact, the Native Tribes included the dxdewabS, (Duwamish - the Inside People) from Seattle to Kent, the sUupabS (Green River People - Auburn to its headwaters) and the spalkoabS (White River People - from Auburn, its headwaters). The Greater Kent Historical Society in the spirit of truth and reconciliation acknowledges that Kent stands and operates within the traditional homelands of the First People of Salish Seas. We are contemporary stewards who have displaced, disposed and involuntarily removed them. We value their significant historical and current contributions including the stories, teachings and local placenames.
Mike Evans, Waq́usqidəb, is the Honorable Chair of the Snohomish Tribe of Indians, Father of the Blue Heron Canoe Family, and Vice President of the Greater Kent Historical Society.
He and others have carved a Welcome Figure which will be permanently installed at the Greater Kent Historical Society and Museum grounds, and it's being unveiled at a special dedication event on April 29 at 1 p.m.!
Our gracious thanks to the City of Kent for this beautiful piece.
The Greater Kent Historical Society operates the Kent Museum and inspires the community to explore and discover their history. We educate and preserve diverse family and kinfolk storylines for future generations.
