GKHS Scholarships

2024 Scholarships

The Greater Kent Historical Society is excited to offer three scholarships for $2,000 for post-high school education or training! These scholarships provide support for students active in contributing to the Kent community to further their education.


Applicants must be graduating seniors from any Kent high school, public or private, or seniors with a Kent mailing address.


Applications have been extended until April 30, 2024. If you have questions, please contact the museum at admin@kenthistoricalmuseum.org or at (253) 854-4330.

Harold Vickrey Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created in memory of the late Harold Vickrey, through the generosity of Jamie and Svetlana Vickrey and community members of Kent. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who believes in the value of family-owned businesses and who demonstrates a commitment to community service.

Japanese American Memorial Scholarship

The Japanese American Memorial Scholarship was created through the generosity of community members of Kent. The scholarship will be awarded to a student studying in any field, with a focus on social justice.

William and Pauline Scott Scholarship

 The William and Pauline Scott Memorial Scholarship was created through the generosity of community members of Kent. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who believes in the value and contribution of the entrepreneurial spirit, minority- and women-owned businesses, and demonstrates a commitment to community service.

How to Apply

 Please review the application requirements and submit all application materials by the application deadline. You may submit applications for multiple scholarships. Each applicant is eligible to receive up to one scholarship. 


All applicants must submit:

  1. The application background form.
  2. Unofficial transcript or latest report card.
  3. Two letters of recommendation: one school-based and one community-based.
  4. Essay response from the scholarship(s) you are applying for.


You can submit your application online using the submissions forms below, or send them via email or mail. All application materials must be submitted or postmarked by April 30, 2024.


Application Rubric

 Applications will be rated based upon the following criteria. Successful applicants do not have to demonstrate all the indicators below but should strive to convey their strengths in each area.

  • Academic excellence: Indicators - Strong transcripts (rigorous course of study with high grades); strong school-based letter of recommendation (highlights specific strengths); quality essay writing.
  • Community involvement: Indicators – Community activities & leadership (involved in variety of activities with leadership roles); strong community-based letter of recommendation.
  • Application-specific qualities: Indicators – responses to the essay prompts demonstrate qualities addressed in that scholarship’s background information.
